Bill Scherban

Calgary based singer-songwriter Bill Scherban's original distinctive sound, offers a broad and diverse palette of easy listening 70’s throwback music reminiscent of the likes of James Taylor, Jim Croce, Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Steve Earl, John Mellencamp & Cat Stevens.

After a 20+ year hiatus from the singer-songwriting groove, he has recently teamed up with Calgary based guitarist extraordinaire, composer and producer Aaron Young to churn out a new creative approach at the raw side of traditional roots songs.

Musical influences:

At six or seven years of age, he was awestruck by the power and the range of American Tenor Mario Lanza’s voice. He grew up listening to Lanza albums such as, The Student Prince, Seven Hills of Rome, The Great Caruso. He started singing around that time, to everything that was on the radio, as well as in church choirs, youth group choirs, & local bands.

In the mid sixties he was caught up in the Guess Who craze, specifically the 1965 hit single ‘Shakin all Over’ with Chad Allen and the Expressions, the original lead singer and founder of the Guess Who. Artists such as Neil Young, Jim Croce (Operator), Lenny Breau, Randy Bachman (Bravebelt, Guess Who, BTO), Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Spinners (Rubber band Man), The Commodores(Brick House, Nightshift) and many others were a huge influence throughout the late 60s, 70s & 80s. Prior to that, the Everly Brothers (Wake up Little Susie, Bye, Bye Love), Roy Orbison (Pretty Woman), The Platters (Only you, Earth Angel), were an influence & contributed to his growing repertoire.

His songwriting became nonexistent throughout the 80s & 90s. In the mid 2000s he started playing and writing a bit more, but it was not until he met Aaron Young in 2022, that the spark for the music scene, songwriting and performing was re-energized.

Over the last 2 years he and Aaron have written and recorded a number of original songs & are in the process of releasing the first of two albums to be available for your listening enjoyment early springtime 2024.
